The Stillness Between Sips
Sip your coffee and savour your Samatha. Namaste
By Samantha McLeod for Caviar Bistro
There’s something luxurious about being awake before the world wakes.
When Vancouverites are still stretching in their beds, and joggers pass by the cafe with earbuds and purposeful footfalls. When the ocean hasn’t quite decided if it wants to wake up from its blue slumber and greet the day.
That’s when the café glows.
Inside, there’s the busy hum of the espresso machine, the clinks of spoons, the wake-up scent of coffee and browning toasts. Croissants going into the oven, bacon crisping up…
…And yet, outside, the marina rests, while seawall strollers drift past with slow intention. It’s not quite morning, not quite day. It’s something softer, something on the edge of potential.
This is when breakfast is at its best.
Take our West Coast breakfast wrap. A warm tortilla, soft and golden, folded around soft scrambled farm eggs, roasted mushrooms, asparagus, cheese ripe tomato and a dash of heat. Each bite is like comfort food, hearty, without ever feeling heavy, and just a bit spicy to wake up the tastebuds.
Pair it with a flat white, strong and smooth, the colour of fresh cedar bark, topped with a hint of a creamy froth.
This is devotion at its finest..
In Buddhism, there is a practice called Samatha. It means calm abiding. Resting in the quiet mind. Not chasing or grasping or changing. Just being present with whatever arises.
A cup of coffee can be that. So can a warm wrap. So can a window.
Here at Caviar Bistro, we like the mornings slow. We like the table for one. The ones who bring their books, their journals, their silence. The ones who come not for distraction but for stillness.
So come early. Sit by the window. Let the sun catch your cheek. Take the first bite. Sip. Breathe.
There is no better way to begin your day.
Wake up slowly with our West Coast Breakfast Wrap. It brings warmth and comfort wrapped in a soft golden tortilla.
Sip your coffee and savour your Samatha.
